James Allen: Who goes where next?

Thursday, 01 October 2009 17:04

Today was a very good day at the track as there is a lot going on.

The feeling in F1 is one of renewal; we have Fernando Alonso going to Ferrari to fight Lewis Hamilton and probably Kimi Raikkonen in McLarens, the Renault cheating scandal is now behind us and new partnerships are being formed for next year.

I like the way the grid is shaping up already, but it is strange that in October barely 50% of the 2010 grid is filled with named drivers.

There are some pieces set to fall into place, the first of which will probably be Robert Kubica at Renault. The Pole has been weighing up his options since BMW's shock announcement of withdrawal from F1 in July.

At one point I thought Williams was his favourite choice but I think he may have been put off by the uncertainty about what engine the team is using in 2010.

That said, nothing is signed yet, according to Kubica today.

Nevertheless, Renault said that it will announce the driver who is replacing Alonso next week.

Note the singular there; it's only one driver they will announce because Romain Grosjean has three more races to prove his worth.

All expectations are that it will be Kubica and my hunch is that he will do a one-year deal because there are quite a few things which could happen in the driver market for 2011 and he will want to be in a position to capitalise if, for example Felipe Massa isn't the same driver as he was before his accident or if Raikkonen goes to McLaren for just one year and then retires.

Equally it is not clear what Renault's situation is at the moment.

They say they are committed but for how long? And what if they cannot find any sponsors, the bill will fall on Renault corporate and in the current climate a budget of £80-100 million, less £25-30 million for prize money and some sponsorship from Total, still leaves a big bill.

Renault is keen to emerge from the cheating scandal and reconfirm its sporting credentials.

It is trying to position itself so that Renault as a brand is to the fore. They hired Flavio Briatore because they wanted to win quickly and he knew the road map for that, but now the strategy is to bundle all the cheating and negativity into his camp and move forward as Renault with a low-key team principal who does not overshadow the team and the badge.

The engineers are still the same, less Pat Symonds, who was a very important person there. But they are still very talented people who haven't forgotten how to build a fast car.

Renault is a work in progress.

Meanwhile Nelson Piquet is still floating around out there, looking for a drive and he has some budget apparently.

It would be quite a shock if he found a place on the grid after what went on, but stranger things have happened in F1.
