Kazuki Nakajima feels his driving improved in 2009 even though he failed to score any points.
The Japanese driver made a good impression with several top eight finishes in his rookie year, but lost momentum this season and trailed his Williams team-mate Nico Rosberg.
Nakajima reckons it was just circumstances in races that prevented him scoring this year, and that his actual performances were better than they had been before.
"It has gone in a very disappointing way in terms of results, but there were a lot of positive aspects as well," he told the Williams podcast.
"I think I improved quite a lot from last year and have been a lot more consistent in qualifying and in the races.
"So it was a good season in one way, but in the results it was not as expected.
"Especially in the middle of the season we had a lot of races where we could have scored a point but it didn't happen.
"Sometimes just a problem in the pit stop, sometimes just losing a bit of time on out and in-laps which caused me to hit traffic.
"It's just so tight in the field and when you lose something it just doesn't work out."
The 24-year-old now faces an uncertain Formula 1 future, having been dropped by Williams, but says he still has options in the championship.
"There are some opportunities for next year," Nakajima said.
"Talking is going on and I'm sure I'll end up with something, but we have to make sure we choose the right one."
