Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has sought to clarify comments attributed to him which called for Max Mosley to resign the FIA presidency despite winning a vote of confidence in Paris this week.
“I think he should realise that sometimes it is necessary to say to yourself, ‘I must leave for reasons of credibility’,” Montezemolo was quoted as saying by Italian news agency ANSA.
However, Montezemolo distanced himself from those remarks in a statement published on Ferrari’s website on Thursday.
The statement read: “Following the statements made to Bloomberg TV and picked up by the other media, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo wishes to make the following comment: ‘I am happy that Max Mosley has been re-elected president of FIA.
‘He has done excellent work for Formula 1 in recent years.
‘With regard to the future, it will be entirely up to him to decide if and when he should take a step back.’”
