Alonso: Win won't affect '09 decision

Fernando Alonso says his Singapore Grand Prix victory will have no bearing on his decision about where he will drive in 2009 - but he declared that his first choice was to stay at Renault.

The former world champion has been the focal point of this year's 'silly season'.

Until Kimi Raikkonen renewed his Ferrari contract, there was speculation that Alonso was destined for Ferrari either in 2009 or 2010.

Honda has also been openly pursuing the Spaniard, while BMW has entered the frame in recent weeks.

Alonso praised the Renault team after his Singapore win, but said it didn't necessarily mean he would stay at the team, although that remained his preference.

"This victory is also thanks to the massive effort they are making with this year's car and next year's car but it's not changing the decision for next year," he said.

"As I've always said, Renault will be my first priority because I feel I'm at home in this team."

Although Alonso has a good relationship with Renault, he has openly admitted that he wants the most competitive car available in 2009, and Renault's difficult season has left him pondering other options.

BMW has the advantage of already being established as the third-fastest team in Formula 1 at present, but whilst Honda's form has been dire for two years, its future looks more promising with ex-Ferrari genius Ross Brawn now in charge and because it switched its full focus to the very different 2009 technical package earlier than any other team.

Alonso said he was very pleased with Renault's progress this year after a difficult start, but remained unsure about his prospects for the rest of 2008.

"We will find out very quickly in Fuji because we cannot forget that this is a very special track, a street circuit like Monaco, corner after corner, second gear, third gear, so very slow, slippery asphalt," he said.

"I think on a normal circuit we will realise the potential of the car a little bit better than on a street circuit, where it's more about the set-up than how lucky and risky the laps are.

"We keep improving the car.

"We started the season quite far away from pole position and from the top teams and now we are much closer, so we are definitely one of the teams who have most improved their car but maybe it was not difficult because at the beginning of the season we were not at the right level."
