Kubica ponders French rally outing

Robert Kubica is contemplating contesting a rally with his new employer Renault later this month.

The Pole has now been released from his contractual obligations to the departing BMW team, and although he cannot test for Renault until the testing ban ends in February 2010, he is considering driving one of its Clio rally cars on French Championship round the Rallye du Var on 27-29 November.

"It’s not 100 per cent certain, but there’s a strong possibility," Kubica told French magazine Auto Hebdo.

"It’s purely for pleasure, to have fun without worrying about times."

Kubica is known to be a massive fan of rallying, and contested a national rally in his Polish homeland four years ago.

He has already begun researching the Var event, which is based around Sainte-Maxime on the French Riviera.

“I’ve asked for videos of the stages from the organisers to get an idea," he said.

"In the meantime I’ve been doing a little bit of research on the internet.

“I already know the roads of the region a bit and I’m assessing the difficulty of the task.

"That’s the only thing that is holding me back.

“It will be enjoyable but difficult."

Earlier this year Kubica's Formula 1 rival Kimi Raikkonen contested the Finnish round of the World Rally Championship in an Abarth Punto run by four times world champion Tommi Makinen.

Although Raikkonen was running in the secondary Production class, he impressed greatly with his pace and has been strongly linked to a full-time rally switch as soon as his F1 career ends.
